Description: Acclaimed Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini (1867-1957) boldly signed this waist-up profile photograph of himself finely dressed and contemplatively propping his baton against his lips.
Toscanini, an intense perfectionist with a photographic memory, began his career as a conductor at age 19 and soon reached international acclaim. He conducted at multiple prestigious venues, including the Metropolitan Opera (1908-1915), the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (1926-1933), the Salzburg Festival (1934-1937), and the NBC Symphony Orchestra (1937-1954).
