Description: This finely executed etching features a whaling ship dockside. Visible in the background is an array of industrial smokestacks… a jarring juxtaposition.
At the lower margin George T. Plowman has signed in graphite and indicated “second state”.
Platemark: 6 5/8″ x 7 3/4″. Printed on a sheet of wove paper which measures 9 1/2″ x 11″. Item #PR00437
George Taylor Plowman (1869-1932), though trained as an architect, is most noted as an etcher. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club, Chicago Society of Etchers, Boston Society of Etchers, and was a Fellow at the Royal Society of the Arts.
Condition: Lightly toned at mat window, a small spot in left blank margin, 2 pieces of hinging tape at upper corners, otherwise good condition.
