Description: Acclaimed American author Norman Mailer signed this photolithographic print of a collage created by artist Larry Rivers that was meant to be a cover for Time magazine. Ultimately the cover was never used because Newsweek ran a cover story on Mailer the previous week. Rivers’ collage features various angles of Norman Mailer: a bare-chested Mailer with a rose in his mouth and hands on his hips stands in front of, and helps to compose, a larger drawing of Mailer’s face in the background.

The image is signed in pencil by both Mailer and Rivers on the blank lower margin and is numbered 55/100.

Norman Mailer (1923-2007) was a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner who wrote numerous novels, essays, and non-fiction narratives. Some of his most famous works include: The Naked and the Dead (1948), Armies of the Night (1968), and The Executioner’s Song (1979).

Larry Rivers (1923-2002) is considered to be the “Godfather” or “Grandfather” of Pop Art, and his work is housed in many major institutions, including the Whitney and the Museum of Modern Art.
