Description: Former Secretary-General of the United Nations U Thant (1909-1974) signed this kind note in 1972 to a fan who wished him a happy birthday. Thant writes in part, “Although I will be officially separated from the United Nations, I intend to contribute, to the best of my ability, to the achievements of the objectives of the United Nations Charter.”
U Thant was a Burmese diplomat and third Secretary-General of the United Nations (1961-1971). Thant facilitated negotiations between President John F. Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 and ordered Operation Grandslam, which ended a secessionist insurgency in Congo.
Typed on an 11″ x 8 1/2″ sheet of Thant’s personal stationery imprinted with the mailing address for the United Nations in New York City. Item #A01494
