Description: Beloved American author E. B. White (1899-1985) signed this friendly typed letter to a Miss Hoffman, expressing his approval of a dust jacket design for his latest book, The Trumpet of the Swan (1970). He writes in part: “I’m returning the jacket sketch—it is being sent by registered mail today. I was very much pleased with it and think it should work out very well. The boy’s attitude and the look on his face are just right, I think, and I hope they can survive, just as they are, in the finished drawing. I like the cygnet and the old cob and the pond, so I think it is a happy arrangement all round.” Ultimately however, the final dust jacket was designed by Edward Frascino.
Typed on a sheet of E. B. White’s personal stationery and dated January 15, 1970. 7″ x 6 1/4″. Item #A01594
E. B. White is remembered for writing children’s classics like Stuart Little (1945), Charlotte’s Web (1952), and Trumpet of the Swan (1970). He also was a contributing writer and editor for The New Yorker, and was a co-author of the English language style guide, The Elements of Style.
Condition: There are a couple of pencil notes in other hands on the letter, mailing fold line, and a small stain near the middle. Generally very good condition.
