Description

Description: We offer an original watercolor of Orchard Beach by Lynn Rowan. The piece is 18” x 24 ⅛” on watercolor paper, signed “Lynn Rowan 47, NY” and inscribed “Orchard Beach” along the bottom margin. Rowan renders a playful and stylized scene of a food kiosk decorated with a crows nest at Orchard Beach, “the Bronx Riviera.” Item #FA00161.

Lynn Rowan was born in California in 1919. He exhibited his work in New York at RoKo Gallery and Bodley Gallery through the late 1940s and early 1950’s. Bodley famously showed the early work of Andy Warhol. His shows were written up in Arts Digest, ArtNews, and The New York Times. Rowan died in 1971 in Gallatin, Illinois and was buried in Shawneeton, Illinois.

Rowan was a confident, exuberant mark marker and colorist whose figurative drawings would seem at home on the cover of the The New Yorker. One address written on the back of a small ink drawing links the artist to 7 West 8th street (curiously close to the New York Studio School, though no formal connection has been made.)  From our collection of his artwork and the press written about Rowan we see that he traveled to Europe, Woodstock, Newport, New Orleans, Key West, Cuba and Haiti. We have many more paintings and watercolors available (portraits, landscapes, still lifes and drawings), not yet listed on our website that have been stored away for decades. Email us for more information and images.

Condition: The colors are still remarkably vibrant and though the edges are lightly dog-eared and there is one repaired tear near the left corner, the piece is in good condition overall.
