Description: John L. Lewis (1880-1969) signed this first day cover that bears an illustration of a train chugging through a factory-filled area as a plane soars overhead. Above and below the image are the words: “U.S. Air Mail First Flight- A. M. Z Reading, PA.” There is a 6-cent air mail stamp with a bald eagle on the upper right corner and the envelope is cancelled with a circular ink stamp from Reading, PA dated August 1, 1941. The panel is addressed to Mr. Frank Kocher of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
John Llewellyn Lewis served as president of the United Mine Workers of America for forty years (1920-1960) and was the driving force behind the formation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO).
