Description: Written in late February of 1933, this brief letter is addressed to "My dear Mrs. Dall." Mary Bean Dall was the mother-in-law of Eleanor’s daughter, Anna, and while Anna’s marriage to Curtis Dall was on the rocks by this time, Eleanor and Mary were apparently maintaining a friendly – or at least cordial – relationship.

Eleanor dictated to a typist, "I am glad that you did not come in for the funeral as it was such a bad day, but I greatly appreciate your sweet note. Very sincerely yours," She signed "Eleanor Roosevelt" boldy, above the typed "(Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt)," and added a handwritten apology in her unique penmanship: "This was dictated before inauguration & I apologize for its tardiness!" – indicating that the letter was actually mailed after March 4, possibly from the White House.

Though Roosevelt may certainly have attended more than one funeral in the early days of 1933, it is likely that the funeral she is referring to here is that of Elisabeth Marbury (1856-1933), a successful literary and theatrical agent and producer, and a Manhattan socialite, who became active in the Democratic National Party in the 20th Century. Marbury and Roosevelt worked together on the monthly Women’s Democratic News publication, and Marbury hosted a luncheon at her home in 1931, in honor of the Roosevelts’ 26th Anniversary. Marbury died suddenly on January 23, 1933, due to complications from a minor surgery. Her funeral was attended by thousands of the greater New York area’s political and social elite, including Roosevelt.

Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) served as First Lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945, while her husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, served as President. She served as a diplomat after her husband’s death. She was the US Delegate to the United Nations from 1945 to 1952, and chaired that body’s Commission on Human Rights.
