Description: This expertly executed watercolor on silk is signed lower right: “By H. Shimidzu Yokohama Japan 1924”.

The S.S. Steel Exporter plies the waters at the base of Mount Fuji. Shimidzu has rendered the ship in great detail, with the American flag, among others, quite visible, as are deck hands, smoke rising from the stacks, rigging, etc. The ship was built in 1920 as part of the Isthmian Lines.

H. Shimidzu is listed in Archibald’s Dictionary of Sea Painters and is in numerous institutional collections including the Peabody Museum in Salem, MA.
