Description: French artist Edouard Detaille (1848-1913) signed this 3 ½” x 5” piece of cardstock in charcoal on December 25, 1903.
Detaille was known for his military paintings which exuded rich detail and realism. He came from a military family and served in the French army himself, gaining knowledge which aided him in his artistic endeavors. Two of his most famous paintings were Le Rêve (1888), a painting that depicts sleeping soldiers dreaming of glory, and The Defense of Champigny (1879), which depicts the Battle of Villiers in the Franco-Prussian War. These two paintings hang in the Musée d’Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, respectively.

Condition: The charcoal has smudged a bit, otherwise very good condition.
