Description: Civil War General Henry Sturgis Russell (1838-1905) quickly penned and signed this brief note that reads: “General It is beyond me, much to my regret – Very truly yours H S Russell”.

Russell joined the Union Army during the Civil War as a lieutenant in the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry. He was captured at the Battle of Cedar Mountain and held in Libby Prison for a few months until he was released in a prisoner exchange. He was promoted to colonel and went on to command the 5th Regiment Massachusetts Colored Volunteer Cavalry. He was brevetted as a brigadier general on March 13, 1865, and later served as the first commissioner of the Boston Fire Department.
