This first edition of Comical Coons, a compilation of racist illustrations by Edward Winsor Kemble, is complete with all 26 black and white plates.

This oblong 9” x 12” hardcover book is bound with a black cloth spine and illustrated paper over boards. The illustrations seem to be paired, with the Table of Contents listing 13 titles/scenes that are illustrated with 26 plates. Published by Robert Howard Russell of New York in 1898.

W. Kemble (1861-1933) was an American illustrator known for illustrating the first edition of Adventures of Huckleberry Finnand for his offensive, exaggerated caricatures of African Americans. Item #AM00231

Condition: Covers worn at extremities and lightly soiled, binding shaken, hinges loosening though all pages still firmly attached, scattered instances of soil, two edge tears repaired with archival tissue tape. Overall good condition.
