Description: Levi P. Morton (1824-1920) scrawled this brief note thanking a Mr. Smith for his “kind words & compliments” on April 28, 1896, while he was serving as Governor of New York.

Morton served as the 22nd Vice President (1889-1893) under Benjamin Harrison, and later as the 31st Governor of New York (1895-1897).

Written on a 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ piece of thick stationery imprinted at the top: “Ellerslie, Rhinecliff-on-Hudson” (Tudor style mansion designed by Richard Morris Hunt for Levi P. Morton in 1885, completed in 1888. Building was located on Ellerslie estate, Morton Rd, Rhinebeck, NY). Item #A01220
