Description: This 1893 check drawn on the National Bank of Illinois is made out to S. A. Douglas Volk for $150. His father, the sculptor Leonard Volk, signed the bottom of the check.
Leonard Wells Volk (1828-1895) is most known for creating one of only two life masks of Lincoln. He created numerous monumental pieces, including Stephen Douglas’ Tomb in Chicago and the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in Rochester.
Stephen Arnold Douglas Volk (1856-1935) was also an artist, though he was a painter, not a sculptor. He attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme. He exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1875 and was one of the founders of the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts.
Stephen A. Douglas Volk signed the verso of the check. There are multiple purple ink bank stamps on both sides of the check. 3″ x 6″. Item #A01730
