Description: American author, historian and Unitarian minister, Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909), penned this letter to Charles Emory Smith, late U.S. minister to Russia and future Postmaster General under Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt.He thanks him for his “elegant hospitality” at an event Hale attended with former President Benjamin Harrison. In the letter Hale requests that Smith send him a “pretty program and menu” from the event to keep as mementos.
Hale is best remembered for his short story, “The Man Without a Country”, first published in 1863.
Written on a folded piece of stationery measuring 6 ¾” x 4 ½”. Item #A00534.
Condition: Several fold lines, some toning on verso of second page, otherwise in very good condition.
