Description: Former New York Governor and U. S. Secretary of State Hamilton Fish (1808-1893) penned this autograph letter signed to a Mr. Bellows on April 2, 1891, about two years before his death. He thanks Mr. Bellows for the bottle of Chateau d’Arche wine he had sent, though, “Unfortunately, my physicians have prohibited my use of wine. They say ‘at least for the present’- How long that may mean, I know not, but during the prohibition I must obey”.

Hamilton Fish served as Governor of New York (1849-1850), a U.S. Senator from New York (1851-1857), and as Secretary of State (1869-1877), under Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes. He was known for his calm demeanor under pressure, his nimble handling of Canada-US border disputes, and the development of the concept of international arbitration.

Written on a sheet of mourning stationery with the address: “251, East Seventeenth Street” that measures 6 7/8” x 4 ½”. Item #A01153
