Description: This wonderful manuscript document literally throws a hat in the ring for the next president.

On October 15, 1884 J. A. Thomas “bets Mr [W.H.] Daniel a Six Dollar Hat, that Mr Cleveland is the next President of the United States.” Verso states “Pa Let the boy Jeems Yonge have one hat and charge W. H. Daniel”.

Accompanying this is an envelope addressed to Mrs. William P. Yonge Savannah, GA with a Charleston Aug. 4 cancellation and a “ship” stamp. Given the date this may only be tangentially related. 5 1/4″ x 8 1/4″. Item #AM00259

Condition: Fold lines, short separation at one fold repaired with archival tissue/tape. Generally good condition.
