Description: American author, historian and Unitarian minister, Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909), penned and signed the motto of the Lend a Hand Society: “Look up and not down, Look forward and not back. Look out and not in. Lend a hand.” The Lend a Hand Society, the modern version of Hale’s Lend a Hand Clubs, is a benevolent organization based in Boston that gives financial assistance to low-income families. 
Hale is best remembered for his short story, “The Man Without a Country”, first published in 1863 in Atlantic Monthly in support of the Union during the Civil War. He was the grand-nephew of Nathan Hale, an American spy during the Revolutionary War.
