Description

Description: Acclaimed French painter Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) penned and signed this brief letter to his dear friend Bertier, probably Francisque-Édouard Bertier (1842-1925), a fellow artist, telling him that “our model Madame Bonnat” did not appear as scheduled and if he sees her, to please tell her to come tomorrow.

Cabanel studied at the venerable École des Beaux-Arts and first exhibited his work at the Paris Salon in 1844. His traditional, academic style paintings often featured mythological subjects, such as his 1863 masterpiece The Birth of Venus, which was purchased by Napoleon III and remains one of the greatest examples of belle époque French painting.
