Description: Dutch-English artist Lawrence Alma-Tadema penned this inquiring autograph letter signed in 1880 which reads in part: “I want ’94. in the Shade’ for the background of my picture – for a couple of days only. Would you be so kind as to lend it me…” Alma-Tadema’s painting Ninety-four Degrees in the Shade shows a boy or young man dressed in an ivory suit with matching hat lying on his stomach and reading a book in the shadow of a haystack while the sun blazes down on the haystacks in the field behind him. The painting is currently housed in the Fitzwilliam Museum at the University of Cambridge in the UK.

The letter is written on a 6 1/4″ x 3 7/8″ piece of stationery imprinted with his London address: “Townshend House, North Gate, Regents Park. N.W.” Item #A01582
