Description: This classic American Institute silver medal was designed in 1841 by American sculptor Robert Lovett (1796-1874). The obverse features a seated Liberty flanked by an eagle atop a shield, a cornucopia, spinning equipment, sailing ship, etc. Reverse is engraved: “Awarded to the Telephone Co. of NY the Medal of Progress for the Telephone 1877”.

Alexander Graham Bell was awarded the first U.S. patent for the invention of the telephone in 1876. The Telephone Company of New York was formed under franchise the same year, ultimately becoming Verizon New York in 1896. The Bell System (Bell Telephone, AT & T) was created in 1877.

A very early recognition of the importance of the invention of the telephone!
