Description: English-born American artist John Sartain (1808-1897) fulfilled, endorsed, and signed this part-printed check for $26.75 as Secretary of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts in 1875. The check is made payable to “John Sartain for Henry Sartain” and is also signed by the president of the Academy (James L. Claghorn). Henry Sartain (1833-1895) was John Sartain’s second son and was also involved in the print world, but more so as a printer rather than a printmaker.

John Sartain was a miniature painter, engraver, magazine publisher and is recognized as the artist who pioneered mezzotint engraving in the United States.

Condition: Fine condition with three neat, bold signatures and several words in Sartain’s hand.
