Description
Description: We offer a scarce bound volume of the entire run of this eight page journal. "The Pearl" was published monthly by Leon Barritt and Edward Jernegan commencing in January of 1875 and surviving for 12 issues… a full year. Focusing on Saugerties’ local history, each issue contains 3 original albumen photographs tipped-in. The photographs depict local scenery, buildings (public and private) and prominent citizens. From our research, apparently only 250 copies were issued each month. The bound octavo volume (8 1/2" x 6 1/2") is 1/2 leather with pebbled cloth boards. Item #AM00209.
Condition: There is some rippling to the pages, which seems to be the result of the glued down photographs expanding or contracting at a rate different from the text pages. The photographs have good resolution but the contrast is a little low on several. Overall in very good condition and a rare surviving record of Saugerties in the 19th century.
