Description: Gerrit Smith (1797-1874) scrawled this brief message on October 7, 1874 which reads in part: “My Dear Sir, I am happy to learn by your letter of the safe arrival of the books and pamphlets. I thank you for mentioning Professor Knapp. My wife… will probably go to New York in a few days… I advise her to consult Prof. Knapp.” Smith’s note is penned on the back of a postcard that is addressed to Professor Willard Fiske (1831-1904) of Cornell University.

Gerrit Smith was an American social reformer, abolitionist, businessman, and philanthropist. He was a member of the Secret Six who financially supported John Brown’s raid at Harpers Ferry in 1859. Smith was a candidate for President of the United States in 1848, 1856, and 1860. He served a single term in the House of Representatives from 1853 to 1854.
