Description:¬†In this 1870’s photograph Sheridan is wearing his military uniform adorned with multiple medals, including the gold medal presented to him by General Grant. He has signed at the lower margin: “P. H. Sheridan Lieut General”. He has also presented and signed on the verso: “Mr. Thomas Donaldson compliments P. H. Sheridan Lieut General”, as well as initialling a note at the bottom: “Please exchange P.H.S.”

Thomas Donaldson was a friend of Sheridan’s and, from 1874-1884, served as an agent for the Smithsonian Institution. This cabinet photograph, with H. Rocher Chicago backmark, dates generally from that period. Sheridan was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1869 and then General-in-Chief of the Army in 1883.
