Description: American actress Charlotte Cushman (1816-1876) exuberantly signed and dated this 3 ¾” x 2 ¾” sentiment in October of 1868. The full sentiment reads: “I am – yours sincerely Charlotte Cushman October 1868”. Cushman was wildly successful as a dramatic actor, her rich contralto voice allowing her to play both male and female parts. She was a great friend of Secretary of State William Seward, who introduced her to President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln, a fan of Macbeth, saw her perform as Lady Macbeth at Grover’s Theatre in 1863.

Contemporary inked note below the signature reads: “Charlotte Cushman. Rec’d through her sister. Mrs. Cartwright – Nantucket.” Card has been affixed to a larger piece of card stock that measures: 3 5/8” x 5 3/8”. Item #A01414
