Description: An impressive "from life" photographic portrait of a caped Thomas Carlyle. Stamped on the verso and recto by the British photographic firm of Elliott & Fry.

Carlyle (1795-1881) was a Scottish polymath who excelled as a philosopher, writer, mathematician, historian, translator and teacher.
