Description: This original, from life, photograph has a backmark of the photographic firm Maull & Co. London. The hirsute Herschel sits at his writing desk with quill pen ready in his right hand.
Sir John Frederick William Herschel ( 1792-1871), mathematician, astronomer, chemist, photographer, etc., made significant contributions in many scientific disciplines. He originated the use of the Julian day system in astronomy, invented the cyanotype process, informed Talbot & Daguerre that “hypo” could be used as a photographic fixer.
