Description

Description: In this effusive autograph letter signed, Wool thanks the New York Secretary of State Henry Randall for “two volumes of the Documentary History of New York”. He expectantly awaits another gift… “it will afford me no less gratification than great pleasure to receive the two additional volumes.”

The four volume set by E. B. O’Callaghan was published in 1849/1851. Wool’s letter is dated June 9th 1852… so it is not clear why he didn’t get all four volumes at once.

John Ellis Wool (1784-1869) served in the War of 1812, the Mexican American War and the Civil War. He was the oldest general during the latter war, being 77 at its start.

Written on one side of a 9 1/4″ x 15″ folded sheet of ruled stationery. Item #A01361

Condition: Dampstain at the left margin touching a few letters of text, mailing folds, otherwise good.
