Description: Rear Admiral Hiram Paulding (1797-1878) signed this 1851 pay receipt for $205.27 from Edward T. Dunn, Purser of the U.S. Navy.

Hiram Paulding was a career serviceman in the Navy, serving during the War of 1812 until after the Civil War. He served with Thomas Macdonough at the Battle of Lake Champlain, with Stephen Decateur against Algerian pirates, and commanded the Washington Naval Yard through the Civil War.
