Description: American Army General James Monroe Bankhead (1783-1856) penned and signed this brief message to the Post Master in Washington concerning a letter he would like to have forwarded to him at Fort Monroe, VA. He writes, “I beg of you the favor to forward it to me”.

Bankhead served as a soldier in the War of 1812, Second Seminole War, and the Mexican-American War during which he was promoted to brigadier general.
