Description: American jurist and legal scholar James Kent (1763-1847) signed this part-printed document appointing Marcus T. Reynolds as a solicitor and counsellor in the Court of Chancery in 1819.
James Kent served as Chancellor of New York from 1814 to 1823. Before that, he served as the Chief Justice of the New York Supreme Court (1804-1814) and Recorder of New York City (1797-1798). He was also the first professor of law at Columbia College (1793-1798). He is remembered for authoring the highly respected four-volume set Commentaries on American Law, first published between 1826 and 1830.
Marcus Tullius Reynolds (1788-1864) was a prominent Albany attorney, a Congressman, state Supreme Court justice and president of three railroad lines, including the Albany & Northern.
The unevenly trimmed vellum document measures approximately 7 ¼” x 9 ½” and has an engraved vignette of the State Seal of New York at the upper left corner and a paper star seal of the Court of New York at the lower left corner. There is a decorative border surrounding the entire document. The verso has a note in ink stating that Marcus T. Reynolds presented himself to Chancellor Kent on January 9, 1819 to take the oath of his new office. Item #A01089.
