Description: Hon. Smith Thompson (1768-1843) practiced law in upstate New York in the 1790s, was appointed Justice of the New York Supreme Court in 1802 and was Chief Justice from 1814-1818. He was also Secretary of the Navy from 1818-1823, and Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1823-1843.

This vellum document, signed by Thompson as Chief Justice of the NY Supreme Court on Jan. 16, 1817, authorizes and licenses Phinehas Randall to practice as an attorney in the court. It measures 7" x 10 1/4", and has a green ribbon and orange wax seal folded up on the lower left. Item #A00273

Condition: Overall light foxing and staining, three vertical fold lines, generally good.
