Description: In this vellum manuscript document signed, Morris states “I do hereby License and Authorize [Leonard Gansevoort junior] to appear in the said court [Supreme Court of Judicature of the State of New York] and there to practice as Counsellor”.
It is dated April 15, 1783 and retains its original wax seal. Document measures: 6 1/4″ x 10 1/2″. Item #A01348
Richard Morris (1730-1810) had an illustrious judicial career. He served as Judge of the Court of Vice-Admiralty, before succeeding John Jay as the second Chief Justice of New York in 1779.
Condition: Three fold lines and some puckering as vellum is wont to do, otherwise good condition with a strong signature.
