William Crothers Fitler (1857-1915) was born in Philadelphia and studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He is known for his landscapes of New York, Connecticut or Long Island. Fitler was a member of the Salmagundi Club, New York Watercolor Club, Brooklyn Art Association, Artists Fund Society and New York Municipal Art Society. He exhibited widely including the National Academy, the Brooklyn Art Club, the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago. Fitler was married to the still life painter Claude Raquet Hirst.
Condition: The painting has been professionally cleaned. It does have some overall craquelure, most prominent in the lighter part of the sky at the left, good condition.
