Description: American aviation pioneer Jimmy Doolittle (1896-1993) signed this portrait photograph of himself dressed in his army uniform and flashing a diminutive smile “To Jack Sutherland. With every good wish.” This photo shows an older Doolittle, years after his celebrated leadership during the “Doolittle Raid”, the bold retaliatory air-raid on Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor for which he received the Medal of Honor.
Doolittle served as a flight instructor during WWI and gained fame for making many pioneering flights during the interwar period, including the first cross-country flight (from Pablo Beach, FL to San Diego, CA). He also attended MIT where he earned his M.S. in aeronautics and received the first Sc. D. in aeronautical engineering ever awarded in the U.S.
