As Governor of New York from 1943-1954, Thomas E. Dewey (1902-1971) oversaw the creation of the State University system and the NYS Thruway. He was unsuccessful in two campaigns as the Republican candidate for President, the second of which was the famous "Dewey Defeats Truman" race of 1948.
