Size: Octavo (standard book size). 2-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is sound. Both volumes: rebacked gilt-stamped brown cloth over boards, frontispiece engravings; Volume I: pub. 1854, (ix), 739 pages plus ads; Vol. II: pub. 1856, 788 pages plus ads. Written by Thomas Hart Benton, a Missouri senator nicknamed "Old Bullion" for his unflinching advocacy for hard currency (gold coin or "bullion" backed currency rather than paper money). He was also a staunch supporter of westward expansion and opposed the institution of slavery. Both volumes: covers worn and stained, foxing and staining throughout, affecting frontispieces; Vol. I text block cracked at pages 160 and 161, slight musty smell. Quantity Available: 1.
