|Description: We offer a large, sparsely painted period Staffordshire flatback figural group of Highland Mary and Robert Burns. The couple sits in a loose embrace under an arch of grapevines. The piece is 14” high, 9 ¼” wide and 3” deep with age appropriate crazing, scattered gilt and polychrome painted details. Item #DA00199.
Mary Campbell or Highland Mary, was Robert Burn’s muse. As interest and circulation of his poetry increased in the second quarter of the 19th century so too did representations of the tragic lovers. Highland Mary and Burns were frequent subjects of Staffordshire groups.
Condition: Overall glaze crazing, a small nick to the underside of the base, otherwise the piece is in very good condition.
