Description: Sir Wilfred Grenfell (1865-1940) was an English physician and missionary in Newfoundland. He signed this whimiscal sketch of a person exuberantly dancing on an ice floe “Greetings, Wilfred Grenfell”.
Grenfell was sent to Newfoundland in 1892 to improve the lives of the coastal inhabitants. He opened cottage hospitals, developed schools, an orphanage, social work, industrial work projects, and even expanded the mission to include the aboriginal people in the area. By 1914 the mission had grown so large that the International Grenfell Association was founded to manage the delivery of healthcare and social services in Newfoundland and Labrador. Grenfell was knighted in 1927 for his years of dedicated service.
