Description: Norwegian opera singer and renowned Wagnerian soprano, Kirsten Flagstad (1895-1962), signed this dramatic photo in the folds of the costume she wore as Isolde in Tristan und Isolde.
Flagstad is ranked as one of the best singers of the 20th century and was known for her ability to learn new roles in only a matter of days. She made her stage debut in 1913 in Oslo as Nuri in Eugen d’Albert’s Tiefland and quickly became a sensation in Europe. She was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in 1935 where she remained for many years. Isolde is Flagstad’s most celebrated role, and is one that she performed over 100 times.
