|Description: We offer an imposing figural bronze by Mathurin Moreau of a young woman at a spring. The piece is 24” high and 8” wide at the base. It is signed along the base “Moreau Math.” with the foundry mark from E. Colin & Cie and it is initialed on the underside “C A F M A.” Moreau’s depiction of an archetypal maiden at the well has a deep and luminous patination and was expertly cast in Paris likely in the late 19th century. Mathurin Moreau (18 November 1822 – 14 February 1912) was a French sculptor in the academic style. He was from a family of sculptors born in Dijon. He first exhibited in the 1848 Salon, and received a medal of honor from the Salon in 1897. He was made mayor of the 19th arrondissement of Paris, and in 1912 had a street named in his honor. His sculptures are found in city squares and landmark parks in Europe, Canada and the United States.
