Description: An almost life-size and striking bronze portrait of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

This bas-relief plaque measures 18 1/2" x 16 1/4" and is signed on the obverse and reverse by the sculptor C. L. Hogeboom and is dated Jan. 21, 1889. Item #DA00236

Charles L. Hogeboom (1827-1895) was a multi-talented individual who graduated in 1851 from the NY College of Physicians and Surgeons, served as a surgeon in the Civil War, wrote numerous articles on a variety of scientific topics and was a prolific sculptor. He apparantly favored bas-relief portraits, including as his subjects Benjamin Franklin, Dr. John Torrey, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson. His works are housed in prestigious institutions, including: the National Gallery of Art and Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
