This book contains four volumes (all 208 articles) of Samuel Johnson's "The Rambler" (March 20, 1750 - March 14, 1752) bound with Lord Lyttleton's Letters from a Persian in England to His Friend at Ispahan. Rebacked, with leather spine and corners, marbled paper over boards, pp. 461, (v), 81. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was an English writer known for compiling the 1755 publication A Dictionary of the English Language, the preeminent British dictionary until the publication of the Oxford English Dictionary in the 1880s. The Rambler stood out from other periodicals of its day due to Johnson's employment of elevated rather than colloquial prose. The articles discussed a variety of subjects, including religion, society, morality, literature and politics. Covers heavily worn, top part of title page torn off, pages stained/foxed, still highly readable. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2 lbs 15 oz.
