Description: Celebrated American jazz musician Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (1899-1974) energetically scrawled his name alongside the looping signature of saxophonist, Johnny Hodges (1907-1970), on this post card for The Hurricane, “New York’s Smart Tropical Restaurant”.
With a successful career spanning more than 50 years, Duke Ellington wrote more than one thousand compositions, many of which have become standards, such as “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If it Ain’t Got That Swing)”.
Johnny Hodges is best known for playing lead alto saxophone with Duke Ellington’s band for many years. His unique, wide vibrato and slurred-note style helped shape the distinctive sound of the band.
