|Description: We offer a large hand-colored lithograph by J. Wolf and H.C. Richter. The composition is roughly 17” x 12” on ivory paper that measures 22” x 15”. The inscription along the lower margin reads: “J. Wolf and H.C. Richter del. Et lith. SYRNIUM ALUCO. Walter & Cohn, Imp.” It is engraved by Josef Wolf and Henry Constantine Richter for the notable work by John Gould The Birds of Great Britain published between 1862 and 1873. Item #PR00251.
There is a storybook quality to this ornithological illustration, with its dynamic composition and lovely variegated detailing in the feathers. Two owls tend to their three owlets, one brings a meal of a dead mouse, while the other keeps a watchful eye over the nest in a hollowed oak branch.
Condition: The margins are lightly toned and there is a repaired 1 ½” tear along the top blank margin (far from the image area). The print retains binding holes along the right margin and is in good, presentable condition.
