Description: French Operatic Soprano Emma Calvé (1858-1942) exuberantly penned this note declining an invitation because she has a “rehearsal at the Metropolitan at that time”.
Calvé was one of the most famous opera singers of the Belle Époque, debuting in 1881 in Gounod’s Faust at La Monnaie in Brussels. During her lengthy career, she sang in London, Paris, Milan, Naples, Rome, and Florence, as well as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she appeared 261 times between 1893 and 1904. Her role as the titular character in Bizet’s Carmen is remembered as being one of the best performances of the character ever given. She is also remembered for her role as Anita in Massenet’s La Navarraise, a character written particularly for Calvé.
The letter is written in French on Hotel Savoy stationery that measures: 8” x 5”. Item #A01045.
