Frances Simches (1920-1975) was born in Jackson, Michigan. She apprenticed with potters in New York City while studying at New York University. She taught extensively at NYU, Greenwich House Potters and later at Russell Sage College, after moving to Albany. For her own work she collected Hudson River clay from around brick factories. Her functional work was sold by George Jensen, Rabun Studios and the International Design Group. Her final teaching position was at the University at Albany as an Assistant Professor of Art. She was recognized for her pioneering work in ceramics and many of her pieces are in public and private collections.
