Description: English artist Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) penned and signed this brief note to a Lady Mary, regrettably declining her invitation as he was already engaged to attend an “Edinburgh party”.
Landseer made a name for himself with his paintings of animals, especially those featuring horses, dogs, and stags. However, his most famous works are the lion sculptures in Trafalgar Square.
The top edge of the 7 1/8” x 4 ¼” letter is tipped to a larger sheet of modern paper which has a red ink stamp on verso which reads: “Provenance: Christie’s New York, Dec. 5, 2017 [indecipherable] The Norman Boas estate”. Item #A00838.
Condition: Fold lines, otherwise this letter is in very good condition.
