Description

Description: We offer a miniature portrait in gouache on wafer with the sight size being 3 5/8" x 2 5/8". It is housed behind glass in a period gilt frame with the outside dimensions 7" x 5 7/8". It is a faithful, moody interpretation of the anonymous portrait of Leonardo da Vinci at the Uffizi gallery in Florence. Celebrated as a self-portrait by the Florentine master for more than two centuries, the portrait was dismissed as a fake in 1938, when X-rays revealed it was made at least a century after da Vinci's death in 1519. This tiny piece was likely made as a souvenir for travelers on their Grand Tour. Item #FA00118. Condition: The outer edge of the frame has been removed, the corners of the remaining frame are chipped with some older infilling in gold paint but the painting is in fine condition.
